May is Tequila Month!

May is Tequila Month!

If you follow us on Instagram you may already know that our featured spirit this month is tequila.  At both our North Attleboro and Seekonk locations, we are proud to offer a vast, thoughtfully curated selection of tequila.  We have a tequila option for every person and every occasion - from subtly flavored to spicy, from trendy to highly sought after by tequila connoisseurs, from good for mixing a delicious margarita to good for simply sipping.

In honor of today being Cinco de Mayo, allow me to tell you a little bit about the national drink of Mexico.  Tequila is made from the fermented juices of the Weber blue agave plant.  You may have heard that when selecting a tequila, you should always check that the label says "100% agave" and I, too, would suggest that.  Some tequilas contain filler ingredients such as glycerin, caramel coloring, and sweeteners, but if you look for "100% agave" on the label, you can be sure you are drinking a pure tequila.  We offer a number of certified additive-free tequilas at both of our locations

Even though a lot of people associate Mexico and tequila with margaritas, in Mexico tequila is most commonly served neat, without lime or salt.  As a general rule, if I am looking for a sipping tequila, I want a Reposado or Anejo.  There are four types of tequila and they are based on the length of time spent aging -

Blanco - also known as silver tequila, blanco is clear and can be unaged or aged for typically less than two months.  This is the tequila I choose for margaritas or any other mixed drink

Reposado - sometimes called golden tequila, reposado is aged between two months and a year in oak barrels and has a smoother taste

Anejo - aged between 1 and 3 years, anejo has a more complex flavor profile and takes on a darker amber coloring

Extra Anejo - the most recently added category, extra anejo is aged for a minimum of three years and has a deeper color and refined, richer taste

Each week this month, I plan to feature one or two of the tequilas we have in stock as well as a recipe.  Be sure to check back here and follow us on IG (especially to hear about new items!)
