June 14th is Flag Day

Flag Day commemorates the United States' adoption of the American Flag we know today back in 1777.  What better way to celebrate Flag Day than with a delicious, patriotic cocktail?  Keep in mind, this cocktail can also be made as part of your July 4th celebration or any time you are feeling particularly patriotic!

Let me preface this recipe by saying layered drinks can be tricky and you might have to make one or two practice glasses before you have it down but, in my experience, your guests won't mind drinking the test glasses.

Firstly, you will need:

1 oz Grenadine

3 oz Lemonade

1 oz Vodka

1 oz Blue Curacao

Ice

Shaker

Glass

Bar spoon*  This is essential for this cocktail.  If you don't have a bar spoon, be sure you have a kitchen spoon.

Add the grenadine to the glass and fill with ice. (The grenadine has the highest sugar content of all the ingredients in this drink and will therefore sink to the bottom of the drink, which is why you want to make it your first layer.  If you attempt to pour it in as the second or third layer, it will still sink but will mix with the other colors on its way down, ruining the layered effect we're going for.)

Next, in a shaker filled with ice, shake the lemonade and vodka.  Then, gently pour the mixture over the back of the spoon into the glass.  This layer will sit on top of the grenadine creating a white layer.  (If you don't use the back of the spoon, you will end up with a pink cocktail in this step.)

For the final step, you will want to repeat that same method of pouring over the back of a clean spoon, this time with the blue curacao.  A little bit of mixing is to be expected in this step but if done correctly, the division between the white and blue layers should still be pretty distinct.

Keep in mind, while the drink will be delicious no matter how it looks, these layers will only last a few minutes so be sure to serve and enjoy right away.
